In May 2010, Dan began experiencing stomach problems and told his wife about it. It started getting worse and worse to the point his wife Jo Ann told him that they had to go to the emergency room immediately. He came to discover that his gallbladder had fallen apart and exploded. Dan began asking the doctors about his hands and feet which had begun getting numb. The doctor’s response was to deal with the gallbladder first.
Not long after the surgery, Dan could not walk as different parts of his body started shutting down. He was then moved to the ICU since the doctors said that he might stop breathing. It was discovered that Dan was suffering from Guillain-Barré, a condition that takes place and the body attacks itself. It also has to do with the sheath as well as the nerves in the arms and legs which are called peripheral nerves.
Dan later developed Bell’s Palsy, which is a condition that causes a nonpermanent weakness or paralysis of the muscles in the face. In this case, his face was down and as a result, he had trouble annunciating. After at least six months of recovery including occupational, speech, and physical therapy, Dan could at least take a few steps. Thankfully, he recovered although he still faced some residual issues. He is currently full of health as he makes sure to exercise and keep in shape.

Ever since his recovery, Dan had been training really hard for Ironman. He did three swims a day, ran twice a week, and biked twice a week. He had done the Ironman before and so he knew how to do it mentally but was now older and not in shape as he referred it to.
