He played major junior hockey in the United States Hockey League with the Waterloo Black Hawks. For the 2008 to 2009 season, Craig was named to the USHL First All-Star Team. He participated as a member of the United States men’s national ice hockey team at the 2011 IIHF World Championship.
Craig then went on to play twain years for the Badgers ice hockey team at the University of Wisconsin. He became the first player since Colin Wilson to make the Predators without first playing for the team’s American Hockey League affiliate after coming out of college early. At the time, the team was the Milwaukee Admirals.
Craig made his NHL premiere in a game against the Columbus Blue Jackets on October 7, 2011. Craig signed a three-year, $9.3 million contract with the Boston Bruins on October 10, 2020. He scored the Game 3 double-overtime winner for the Bruins against the Washington Capitals on May 19, 2021. Thus, Craig gave them a 2-1 series lead in their first-round series. He scored the goal when Ilya Samsonov, the Capitals goalie misplayed the puck behind the net. Alex Ovechkin, Capitals captain controversially scolded Craig in Russian after the game ended. The Bruins then went on to win the series against the Capitals in 5 games.
