He played for the team from 1993 to 1996 before he was traded to the Florida Marlins in exchange for Joe Orsulak and Dustin Hermanson. Moreover, he played for the Marlins from 1997 to 2002. Cliff was later traded back to the Expos. he was shortly sent to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for Seung Song and Sun-Woo Kim.
From 2003 to 2006 he played for New York Mets, however, he was hampered by injuries in 2003 and 2004. Further, on January 21, 2007, he agreed to a one-year, $3 million deal with his hometown Chicago Cubs for the 2007 season.
