Cliff was later traded back to the Expos. he was shortly sent to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for Seung Song and Sun-Woo Kim.

From 2003 to 2006 he played for New York Mets, however, he was hampered by injuries in 2003 and 2004. Further, on January 21, 2007, he agreed to a one-year, $3 million deal with his hometown Chicago Cubs for the 2007 season.
