Clay Jones (Full Name: Clayton “Clay” Jones) is a popular American editorial cartoonist who self-syndicates cartoons for newspapers, online news, and CNN. He also provides a weekly cartoon for CNN Opinion’s weekly newsletter, Provoke/Persuade. Clay worked as the staff editorial cartoonist at The Free Lance-Star from 1998 through 2012.
From 2000 until 2012 Clay’s tenure was syndicated to more than 400 publications by Creators Syndicate. Now, Clay is self-syndicating his tenure nationally to more than 50 newspapers and news websites from his website, claytoonz.com, where he also sometimes writes a blog. He sketched cartoons for The Daily Dot in 2014 and 2015.
Clay at times will form an exclusive cartoon for many publications. Formerly, Clay’s tenure was also a feature on the website liberalamerica.org, until he left over disagreements of their policy allowing articles to be released under pseudonyms and other ethical concerns with the site’s news reporting. He shortly came back to The Free Lance-Star in 2014-2015 as a freelancer to provide a weekly cartoon and a weekly caption contest for fredericksburg.com. He contributed a weekly cartoon to The Costa Rica Star from 2016 until 2019.

Clay’s first cartooning tenure was for The Panolian in Batesville, Mississippi where he served from 1989 until 1995. Clay departed the Panolian to serve for the Daily Leader in Brookhaven, Mississippi, which he departed in September of the same year. From the early 1990s until 1997, Clay self-syndicated five cartoons a week to more than 40 newspapers in Mississippi on state subjects, also while providing an exclusive cartoon to the Mississippi Business Journal once a week.
He was employed by The Honolulu Star-Bulletin to fill in for a year while their frequent cartoonist, Corky Trinidad, took a year-long sabbatical. Following departing Honolulu, Clay was employed by The Free Lance-Star. Besides drawing five cartoons a week for the paper, Clay also wrote a daily column and sketched a weekly caption contest. Staff cutbacks removed Clay’s job in August 2012.
Clay did not cartoon again until October 2013 when he began serving for his previous employer on a freelance basis. In February 2014 Clay ended his business relationship with Creators Syndicate to begin his own syndication. A cartoon of Clay’s shared in August 2012, by actor George Takei got more than 900 comments, more than 56,000 likes as well as shared more than 6,000 times.
