In October 2003, Old Fire raged toward Highway 18 near Running Springs in the San Bernardino Mountains. Henry and his cameraman Lee were in their van trying to start it. The fire was too close, depriving the van’s engine of needed oxygen and disabling it.
Fortunately, firefighters ran down the highway leading Henry and Lee to safety as the fire engulfed the news van. Wildfires burned all around Southern California, where at least 17 people died, more than 1,500 homes destroyed, and California faced more than $2 billion worth of damage.
