Christopher found out in April 2007 that his family had been hit by a bus in South London, leaving his wife Sarah badly injured and killing her mother Elizabeth. His daughter lost her right leg in the crash. As a result, Sarah and her sister created a charity called Elizabeth’s Legacy of Hope devoted to helping young amputees in developing countries.

After the crash, Christopher and Sarah moved to Norfolk. They became affected in the long term by suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. The court jailed the bus driver for four years after he was found guilty of death by dangerous driving. Transport for London launched the Sarah Hope Line in April 2016, to provide advice and support to people affected by serious incidents on London’s transport network. A fellow journalist and friend named Tim Shipman helped give  Christopher the nickname Chopper

Also, James called on UKIP to apologize for  Christopher’s “disgraceful treatment”. The journalist served as chairman of the Lobby in  2019 and 2020. In 2019, Christopher clarified in an interview his and The Telegraph’s relationship with Prime Minister and former columnist Boris Johnson. The coin was minted due to his suggestion of a Brexit 50p coin.
