Chelsea Winstanley ( Full Name: Chelsea Jane Winstanley) is a popular New Zealand film producer who has directed numerous documentaries, including Toi Tū, Toi Ora: Visual Sovereignty and in 2018, she produced the documentary Merata: How Mum Decolonised the Screen. She is also known as the first wife of Taika Waititi.
She also served as producer for Taika Waititi’s 2019 horror mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows and Jojo Rabbit. Chelsea also co-produced Merata Mita’s documentary about domestic abuse Saving Grace, Te Whakarauora Tangata. In 2017, Chelsea created the film production company Matewa Media alongside Tweedie Waititi, which focuses on creating Māori language adaptations of Disney animated films. Chelsea directed the documentary Toi Tū Toi Ora in 2020.
In 2015, Chelsea was the New Zealand Women in Film and Television’s Mana Wahine recipient at Wairoa’s Maori Film Festival. In the 2022 Queen’s Birthday and Platinum Jubilee Honours, Chelsea was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to the screen industry and Māori. Besides, Chelsea has won two awards at the Women in Film and Television New Zealand Awards: in 2009 she won the Woman to Watch Award, and in 2022 Chelsea won the Award for Achievement in Film.
