Cary Elwes is an English actor and writer. He is known for his leading film role as Westley in The Princess Bride (1987). Cary also played Robin Hood in Robin Hood and Dr. Lawrence Gordon in the Saw film series.

His other performances in films include Glory, Hot Shots!, Days of Thunder, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and Twister among others. He has appeared on television in a number of series including The X-Files, Seinfeld, Psych, Life in Pieces, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

He was born in Westminster, London, to his parents Dominic Elwes and Tessa Kennedy. Cary’s father was a portrait painter and his mother was an interior designer and socialite. He is the brother of artist Damian Elwes and film producers Cassian Elwes and Milica Kastner. Cary has English, Irish, Scottish, Croatian-Jewish, and Serbian ancestry.

He was brought up as a Roman Catholic and was an altar boy at Westminster Cathedral. His parents divorced when he was four years old. In 1975, when Cary was 13, his father committed suicide. In March 2021, he posted on his social media accounts that his younger sister Milica had died after battling Stage 4 cancer for more than a year.
