Bill Addison La Times
The Los Angeles Times officially started staffing up its food section in November 2018 as Eater’s own national critic Bill tapped as one of the paper’s next critics of record following the death of Jonathan Gold earlier in 2018. Before joining La Times, Bill spent much of the past four years traveling the entire country anonymously in search of the best new and classic restaurants, eating hundreds of meals annually in cities large and small.
Also, he helped to spearhead Eater’s own regional guides including one for the state of California. Bill put a particular focus on highlighting places, people, and regions that are not often covered by more mainstream coastal media outlets. He became a Los Angeles full-time after joining La Times in hopes of elevating the food section with his prodigious writing and previous literary and James Beard Foundation awards.
Bill was the first big hire since contributing editor Peter Meehan came on board to help acting food editor Jenn Harris run the food section. Previously, Peter oversaw the editorial for the food literary magazine Lucky Peach. He was brought on in part to help shepherd an influx of new talent that the Los Angeles Times had committed to financing a robust food section under owner Patrick Soon-Shiong. Beyond picking talent, Pater edited and directed the vertical, and even helped out with the Times food events side like the month-long annual Food Bowl as well as 101 best restaurants event.
