Kevin Merida is an American author, journalist, and newspaper editor. Currently, he serves as executive editor at the Los Angeles Times. His major role is to oversee and coordinate all news-gathering operations such as Sports & Features departments, city & national desks, Times Community News, and Los Angeles Times en Español. Before joining the Times, Kevin served as an ESPN Senior VP and editor-in-chief.

In May 2016, he supervised the creation and launch of a multimedia platform called Andscape that explores the intersections of race, sports, and culture. During his tenure as editor-in-chief, Kevin expanded The Undefeated brand across Walt Disney Co./ESPN, with a content portfolio encompassing award-winning journalism, albums, music videos, documentaries & television specials, live events, and digital talk shows, as well as two bestselling children’s books. While working for ESPN, Kevin oversaw the investigative/news enterprise unit, “Outside the Lines” and the television shows “E:60.” He also chaired ESPN’s editorial board.

Later, he was promoted to Washington-based national correspondent and then-White House correspondent. Kevin was assigned the role of covering the George H.W. Bush presidency. By the time he was living the paper, Kevin was serving as the assistant managing editor in charge of foreign and national news coverage. He wrote about crime and society in those newspapers. The Washington Post hired him in 1993. During his 22-year career at the paper. Kevin served in various positions. He started as a congressional correspondent and then became a national political reporter.

Shortly after, he was promoted to long-form feature writer, magazine columnist, and finally senior editor in several roles. Kevin served as the coordinating editor of the Post’s year-long 2006 series titled “Being a Black Man.” This series was featured in the newspaper. It earned a Peabody Award for increasing “our ability to understand the old issues in new ways.” Also, the same award was meant for its “melding of old and new forms of journalism and pointing to the future of electronic communication.”

Kevin became Assistant Managing Editor at The Washington Post for the paper’s United States national news department in 2008. His major achievement was leading the national staff for four years during the Obama presidency. In the same year, Kevin teamed with Deborah Willis to co-author the bestselling hardcover photo book titled Obama, the Historic Campaign in Photographs. He as well co-authored a book titled ‘Supreme Discomfort: The Divided Soul of Clarence Thomas, about Clarence Thomas, with Michael A. Fletcher.
