However, his Dad would drop him off at school on his way to work, he would give Ben a dime to buy a newspaper at the nearby corner store.
His dad didn’t have time to read the paper at work, so Ben would bring it to school with him. And since he was (and still is) a voracious reader, Ben actually read the paper and got interested in current events. He also had an interest in science — in particular, space exploration as well as the race to get a man to the moon. When that finally happened, Ben watched Walter Cronkite and his excitement and knowledge as he covered the historic event.
Since Ben can’t really pick a favorite between journalism and science, he chooses to report on the weather brings them together for him. Ben became the news director of the student radio station during her freshman year. He also worked as the news director at a small market radio station in Portland. The experience taught him a lot. That’s where Ben got to meet former Presidents Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter and dove into theater and music.
He however returned to Hawaii after a dozen years away and worked in radio until an offer came to be a television weather anchor. Ben considered for three days whether to take the offer, a good friend of his said it would be an opportunity to spread science. So he accepted, and the opportunity also led to a chance to meet and sit in with some of the best local musicians. Also, Ben met even more fascinating people, went to places most people don’t see, experienced some history, learned new things, and also shared those stories with his viewers.
