Ben Braun ( Full name: Benjamin Abraham Braun) is an American retired men’s college basketball coach. Currently, Ben serves as the studio and game basketball analyst for the Pac-12 Network. From 1977 to 1985, he was the head men’s basketball coach at Siena Heights University. He has been named the Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year thrice.
He worked in the same position at Eastern Michigan University from 1986 to 1996, the University of California, Berkeley from 1996 until 2008, as well as Rice University from 2008 to 2014. He graduated from Wisconsin in 1975 and immediately launched his career by serving as an assistant coach at Washington Park High School in Racine, Wisconsin. Ben coached high school basketball for two years before he accepted the head coaching job at Siena Heights University. At Siena Heights, he worked for eight years and managed to take the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) school to a 148–103 record as well as five postseason tournaments.
Ben became the associate head coach at Eastern Michigan before the 1985–86 season. On January 15, 1986, Midway through the year, he was promoted to interim head coach. His Hurons (Eagles from 1991 onwards) were in the NCAA Tournament within two years for the first time in school history. Ben guided the Eagles to four postseason berths including three NCAA appearances during his 11 years at Eastern Michigan. His records 185–132 made him the Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year thrice. He had the most wins, 185 in the Eastern Michigan Eagles men’s basketball coach history.
Ben became the head coach of the U.S. men’s basketball team during the summer of 1989 at the 1989 Maccabiah Games. However, the team lost to Team Israel in the final. Before the 1996–97 season Ben took over from Todd Bozeman as the head coach at Cal. The Golden Bears were predicted to finish in the bottom half of the conference and therefore expectations were low. Nonetheless, his team reached the NCAA Sweet 16 and finished tied for second in the conference. The team gave Ben a school record for most wins by a Bear coach in his first year with the program by finishing the season 23–9.
