In 1964, he graduated cum laude with a B.A. in biology. Subsequently, Andrew attended Harvard Medical School and received a medical degree in 1968. Later, he moved to San Francisco and completed a one-year medical internship at Mount Zion Hospital in 1968–69.

Andrew invented The 4-7-8 breathing technique, a breathing pattern based on an ancient yogic technique called pranayama, which helps practitioners gain control over their breathing.

It requires one to close their lips and inhale through their nose for a count of four. Hold Their breath for a count of seven. Exhale completely through their mouth making a whoosh sound for a count of eight. This completes one cycle. Andrew also published an audio Breathing: The Master Key to Self Healing, audio CD, Sounds True in 2000.
