Alisa Valdes Rodriguez is an American best-selling author, journalist, and film producer. She is best known for her bestselling novel titled The Dirty Girls Social Club. Alisa was named one of Time Magazine’s 25 Most Influential Hispanics. Alisa is best known for never letting readers of her blog forget either fact.

She has contributed to the literary field such as Playing with Boys, Dirty Girls Social Club, and thinly disguised attacks upon Jennifer Lopez.  Every serious reviewer that has read their jackets has described Alisa’s works as garbage. She was born and raised by her parents in  Albuquerque, New Mexico. Alisa’s dad Nelson Valdés is a retired sociology professor at the University of New Mexico. He emigrated from Cuba in the early 1960s. Alisa’s mother, Maxine Conant, is a seventh-generation New Mexican of mixed heritage, including  Native American, French Jewish, Mexican, Spanish,  and Irish ancestry.

Maxine has English lines tracing directly back to Roger Conant, founder of Salem, Massachusetts, as well as Vermont revolutionary Ethan Allen.  Alisa spent her childhood primarily in New Mexico. However, she also lived briefly in Glasgow, Scotland, and New Orleans.

She started writing freelance music reviews for The Boston Globe while a student at Berklee. Alisa took an unpaid internship at the Village Voice after graduating from Berklee in 1992.  In 1994, she went back to school to earn a master’s degree from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. In the same year, Alisa then joined the staff of The Boston Globe where she wrote for the Living/Arts section.

Her essay for The Boston Globe Magazine titled “Daughter of Cuba,” won first place in the 1998 SUNMAG essay contest. Her first novel titled  The Dirty Girls Social Club was bought by St. Martin’s Press a little more than a year after  Alisa left the Los Angeles Times. After five publishing houses bid for the manuscript, she was paid an advance of $475,000. Chicago Tribune reporter Patrick T. Reardon wrote  in a profile of the writer, titled “The Latina Terry McMillan?” that “What made [the book] especially hot was the belief among publishers that Valdes-Rodriguez could be the long-sought ‘Latina Terry McMillan’ — a writer whose work would jump-start Hispanic book buying in the U.S. and create a new profitable publishing niche…”

The novel garnered media attention and become a New York Times bestseller and a Booksense 76 top pick. In 2013, Alisa wrote a memoir, The Feminist and the Cowboy: An Unlikely Love Story. It detailed her relationship with a conservative ranch hand and how it led her to rethink some of her feminist beliefs. She alleged that the relationship was abusive after the book was published. Time dubbed Alisa “The Godmother of Chica Lit” and also named her one of the 25 most influential Hispanics in the United States in 2015.

Hispanic Business Magazine has named Alisa twice among the 100 Most Influential Hispanics in America. The Hispanic Congressional Caucus awarded her with a Latina Leadership award in 2016. She also took part in the National Book Festival at the Library of Congress.  In 2004, Alisa received the Theatre of Hearts “Youth First” award in Los Angeles.
