Alice Marie Johnson Book

She published a nice book- probably the best one she had ever read this year by a long shot, maybe the last several years. Biography books are hit or miss for me, mostly because they seem unbalanced or not encouraging. A lot of childhood/too much ‘extra’ stuff that is not relevant (it’s not clear what is important, what will stand the test of time, or appeasing someone and not contributing to the content, etc.).

What was most important about this story was how it seems like it could happen to anyone- especially beginning with teen pregnancy. Followed by financial ruin, and misdirection in life. These are incredibly timeless and relevant themes. Additionally, the very prominent need for prison reform. About the issue of abortion, Alice thought the most important point is how to stop the mistake that landed the person in financial problems in the first place. Alice clearly had great potential from the start, but lack of focus and life circumstances ruined her entire life.

Alice Marie Johnson Speech

She recounts the story of her journey to forgiveness, detailing how she held on to her own hope while giving hope to others during her 21 years in prison. All the way from being an ordained minister to mentoring her fellow prisoners to writing plays.

Alice reveals how Christianity and an unshakable belief in the almighty God helped her overcome, using her time behind bars to make the prison around her a better place for others. Providing an intimate portrait of America’s crisis in mass incarceration, Alice links social activism to her spiritual faith, and in the process makes a persuasive and poignant argument for the advantage of achieving a justice that transcends politics.

In September 2019, she met with Bee Lee Governor of Tennessee to bring greater access to expungement and prisoner teachings and reduction in barriers to reduce, and express concerns about the cash bail system.

Alice also advocates for the inclusion of female voices in the debate around criminal justice reform. In front of women’s international day in 2019, the woman featured her story as part of its “Courage to Question” series. Memoirs were written by Alice with Nancy French,  in May 2019, Named; After Life: My Journey From Incarceration To Freedom.  Harper Collins published it with a foreword written by Kim Kardashian West.

Alice Marie Johnson Kim Kardashian

In late May 2018, Kim met with the President in the Oval Office to urge him to pardon Alice. On June 6, 2018, after Kim’s appeal, Trump commuted her sentence, and Alice was released. The commutation became one of a series of acts of clemency made by Trump in a “few high-profile cases brought to him by associates and allies.”
