Alex Crawford ( Full name: Alexandra Christine Crawford, OBE) is a British journalist. She currently works as a Special Correspondent for Sky News based in Turkey. Alex reported in 2015 that the mighty Victoria Falls, separating the nations of Zambia and Zimbabwe was drying up.

Later, she was accused by Tourism promoters and local leaders in both Zimbabwe and Zambia of being an alarmist and ‘creating the news she reported on. They said that Alex insisted on what the interviewees said in her report. The Zambezi river which passes through the falls experiences very high or very low water levels every 10 years or so. A fact that Alex was accused of not including in her report.

Alex was named the Journalist of the Year by the Royal Television Society on five occasions. The journalist covered the 2011 Libyan Civil War and was widely praised for her live on-scene reporting of the Battle of Tripoli.

The journalist was the first TV reporter to enter Libya with the rebels. Alex traveled with a rebel convoy into the heart of Tripoli where she shot direct live footage of the rebel advances, which reached Green Square with little resistance from pro-Gaddafi forces. Alex wore a helmet and bulletproof vest, saying that she did not feel in any danger, but wore them as a precaution against celebratory gunfire. Also, she covered the raid of Bab al-Azizia live from outside the compound. Alex was one of the first journalists who went inside once the raid was over.

Currently, Alex covers the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine. She started her coverage on March 5, 2022. She interviewed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in English on March 9, 2022, where they discussed the current state of the conflict. From 15 January 2013 until the end of French military operations, Alex was active in covering the Northern Mali conflict.

Her team from Sky News was the first to enter Timbuktu after it was liberated by French forces. Alex and her media team, including Sky producer Martin Vowles and two civilian activists, came under fire in April 2019, amid the Dawn of Idlib military operation. Syrian government forces invaded the contested village of Hbit in the northern Idlib Governorate.

Alex said, “we were spotted by a military drone and then repeatedly shot at with what we believe were 125mm shells probably fired from a T-72 Russian battle tank”. An activist from New York called Bilal Abdul Kareem, who had been acting as Alex’s guide was injured in the shelling by shrapnel and taken to Khan Shaykhun for medical treatment.
