Al Madrigal ( Full name: Alessandro Liborio Madrigal ) is an American producer, actor, writer and comedian. Alongside Bill Burr, Al co-founded the All Things Comedy podcast network. He became publicly known on The Daily Show as a regular correspondent for five seasons with Jon Stewart.

Away from the standup world, Al is also known for his co-starring roles in CBS sitcoms Gary Unmarried and Welcome to The Captain,  NBC’s About A Boy, Showtime’s dark comedy I’m Dying Up Here,  as well as the film Night School. Al, with Craig Ferguson, were regular sketch performers on The Late Late Show.

His stand-up comedy is story-based and centered on  Al’s personal life, family, and also the confusion caused by his multiethnic background. During his early comedy career,  Al was often pigeonholed as a “Latino comic.”  He says that he has been criticized for not being Latino enough, eg for not speaking Spanish.

Al launched his career in San Francisco’s comedy clubs as a solo performer as well as a member of the sketch group Fresh Robots, which he co-founded. In 2002,  Al enjoyed his first major exposure to two comedy festivals: SF Sketchfest, as part of Fresh Robots, as well as the “New Faces” showcase of the Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal. In 2004,  he won a jury award for being the best stand-up comedian at the U.S. Comedy Arts Festival in Aspen, Colorado.  He then signed a talent-holding deal with CBS after the victory.

In April 2013,  Al’s first one-hour special titled “Why Is The Rabbit Crying?,” premiered on Comedy Central. The special became one of the top 10 comedy specials of 2013 named by Westword and The Village Voice.  Al taped his latest stand-up special titled “Shrimpin’ Ain’t Easy” in the Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever Cemetery in December 2016. It was directed by Neal Brennan and the special premiered in 2017 on SHOWTIME.

It was announced on May 17, 2011, that  Al would become part of  The Daily Show and team up with Jon Stewart where Al would be presented as the “Senior Latino Correspondent.” He auditioned for the show on the recommendation of one of the show’s producers, stand-up comedian Adam Lowitt.

Al and Lowitt performed a piece at Caroline’s on Debbie Riddle, Texas Representative.  Debbie proposed a bill that would help in creating state punishments for any person who hired unauthorized immigrants “intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly” apart from domestic workers. Later, Al did a reading of the piece with Jon Stewart, who employed him on the spot.
