He works as the host of a game show on Game Show Network called Tug of Words since November 2021. Prior to that, he worked as a studio anchor and game reporter for NBC and ABC, as well as hosting NBA Inside Stuff for 16 seasons. As a football player, he played the position of Wide receiver for Minnesota Vikings, St. Louis Cardinals, and Buffalo Bills.

Ahmad played as a wingback and wide receiver in 1969 as a sophomore and made the all-conference team. He played for the St. Louis Cardinals from 1972 to 1973. In 1974 he played for the Buffalo Bills team for the one-game season.

He was a free agent, then was traded days before the start of the 1976 regular season to the Minnesota Vikings where he played for the team until 1982. During his time at the team, he appeared in the Super Bowl, was awarded Minnesota Vikings Ring of Honor, and was also Second-team All-Pro in 1979.
