Josh Barnett ( Full name: Joshua Lawrence Barnett ) is an American color commentator, professional wrestler, submission grappler, mixed martial artist, and former UFC Heavyweight Champion. He is currently signed to Bellator MMA and they expect him to compete in their Heavyweight division. Previously, Josh competed for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
He won the King of Pancrase Openweight Championship in 2003. Josh was a finalist in the 2006 PRIDE Openweight Grand Prix as well as the 2012 Strikeforce Heavyweight Championship Grand Prix. Also, he competed in Impact FC, DREAM, World Victory Road, and Affliction. Josh was the World No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Champion in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, in 2009.
In 2014, he won the inaugural Metamoris Heavyweight Championship. Josh made his in-ring debut as a professional wrestler against IWGP Heavyweight Champion Yuji Nagata in 2003 during the main event of New Japan Pro-Wrestling’s annual January 4 Tokyo Dome Show. Josh has since then wrestled for Inoki Genome Federation as well as Total Nonstop Action Wrestling. For the UFC Heavyweight Championship against Randy Couture ( then-champion and future UFC Hall of Famer), Josh was given a title shot. Josh won via TKO after he used the ground and pound technique hence becoming the new and youngest-ever UFC Heavyweight Champion. However, his title was stripped after USDA revealed that Josh had tested positive for banned substances again. Initially, he declined to sign with the UFC but on May 21, 2013, an announcement came that Josh had returned to the UFC and signed a multi-fight contract with the promotion.
He faced Frank Mir ( former UFC Heavyweight Champion) on August 31, 2013, at UFC 164 and won the fight by knockout in the first round. On December 28, 2013, he faced Travis Browne at UFC 168 and lost the fight in the first round via knockout as a result of elbow strikes. Josh faced Roy Nelson in the main event at UFC Fight Night 75 after he worked as a coach on Road to UFC Japan. He won the fight through unanimous decisions (48–47, 48–47, and 50–45). The victory earned Josh his first Performance of the Night bonus award.
On January 30, 2016, he faced Ben Rothwell at UFC on Fox 18 but lost the fight in the second round due to a gogó choke. This marked the first loss due to a submission hold during his lengthy MMA career. UFC invited Josh to compete in the UFC with a 9–0 record. He made his UFC debut on November 17, 2000, at UFC 28 against 6′ 10″ Gan “The Giant” McGee. Josh won in the second round via TKO. UFC was notified in December 2016, of a potential USADA doping violation by Josh from an out-of-competition test. He was clear to fight in March 2018. Instead of a suspension from USADA, Josh received a “public reprimand” after USADA determined that he failed the test as the result of a contaminated supplement. They granted Josh his request on June 20, 2018, to be released from UFC claiming that he does not trust the United States Anti-Doping Agency.
