Reed Cowan ( aka Reed Abplanalp-Cowan/Darrin Reed Cowan) is an American journalist, filmmaker, public speaker, and author. He currently works for KPIX 5 as their 3 pm Anchor, Reporter, and Executive Producer of Community Impact for CBS epic storyteller initiative.
Reed joined KPIX 5 in early 2022. He previously served as the co-director of the GLAAD Media Award-winning 2010 documentary 8 titled The Mormon Proposition with Steven Greenstreet. Reed launched his journalism career by working as a radio disc-jockey for KNEU Radio based in Roosevelt, Utah.

Wesley’s death prompted Reed to start the Wesley Smiles Coalition. The organization works with Free the Children to raise money so as to build schools in Africa. Also, he made the 2007 documentary called The Other Side of the Lens.
The documentary covers his emotions over his son’s death as well as his experiences with the media attention Wesley’s death attracted. He currently works on the advisory board for Free The Children. This is a child advocacy organization serving as a producer for the youth organization Power In You. Additionally, Reed is an active supporter of anti-bullying legislation. He has also worked as a public speaker on the subject of bullying in school.

In 1995, he began working as a part-time on-air reporter for Fox’s KSTU based in Salt Lake City, Utah. During that time, Reed was a student at Utah State University. After leaving the network, he became a full-time anchor for KBAK-TV based in Bakersfield, California as well as an anchor for WWTV based in Cadillac, Michigan. From there, Reed secured a job as a reporter and weekend morning anchor at KSL-TV based in Salt Lake City.
After he left KSL-TV, Reed proceeded to join KTVX in Salt Lake City. While there, he was responsible for anchoring Good Morning Utah. Also, Reed covered the fugitive stories of polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs, the death of former President Ronald Reagan, the murder of Lori Hacking, the kidnapping of Elizabeth Smart, as well as the terrorist attacks of 9-11. Reed was nominated and won Emmy awards for his coverage and reporting.

In April 2021, Reed demanded to be paid $20 million from Toronto-based WE Charity. he said that the organization should pay him the demanded amount for “destruction of his character as well as marketability as a journalist, filmmaker, public speaker, and author.” Reed stated that if the organization failed to pay the demanded amount, he would use his position as a journalist working for Sinclair Broadcast Group to destroy the reputation of the organization.
The dispute came from the placement of a plaque honoring Reed’s deceased son Wesley at a school-based in Kenya built by WE Charity. Several weeks prior to the arose of the dispute, Reed had testified before the Canadian Parliament. In response, WE Charity’s attorneys accused Reed of attempting extortion. Mary Hausch, journalism professor and media ethics specialist from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas commented that Reed’s threats breached established standards requiring journalists to avoid conflicts of interest.
