While in College, Nicole began experiencing bizarre, life-threatening symptoms. It was on February 14, 2013, when she began experiencing shooting pain in her neck and shoulder and her throat felt like it was on fire. She was also violently nauseous and throwing up. That was the moment that she knew something was not right.
Nicole’s roommate rushed her to the hospital where she received immediate treatment before bringing an ambulance to take her to Key the Medical Center. While there, she spent five nights in the ICU. After going back to college, Nicole began experiencing brain fatigue, headaches, and joint aches. After graduating and landing her first job in Florida, Nicole’s symptoms worsened and that was when she met Dr. Albert Avila who was able to figure out what she had been suffering from.
It was discovered that Nicole was suffering from Lyme disease. Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia Burgdorferi and rarely Borreli mayonii which is transmitted to humans through bites of infected black-legged ticks.

While there, she also served as the lead medical reporter, where she shared her stories with their coverage partner WFLA in Tampa and also NBC News Channel making her stories accessible to all NBC affiliates in the nation.
