He was born and raised in Barrio as Simon in the United States by his parents. Jim is a proud son to a veteran radio broadcaster and former president of the Mutual Broadcasting System. Jim’s dad Jim Simon and mum Eve Avila were both descendants of immigrants. He referred to his mother as “the gorgeous Latina down the street” and his dad was the only white kid at Los Angeles Garfield High School; all his parents were missionaries.

All his maternal grandparents immigrated to the United States from Chihuahua, Mexico, in 1902. Jim said his family history is the same as that of several Hispanic students at the Alamo Colleges.
Jim’s grandmother and grandfather had eight kids who toiled hard in the fields of Imperial Valley in Los Angeles. Therefore, his grandfather worked hard until when he died at the age of 71, while his grandmother died at 89, not knowing how to speak English. When he was diagnosed by his doctors that he would need a new kidney due to diabetes-related kidney failure, Jim was determined to avoid dialysis and started looking into getting a kidney transplant at the Cedars-Sinai Comprehensive Transplant Center. His family members, including Avila’s three children, quickly volunteered to give him one of their kidneys.

Jim’s youngest brother Jaie Avila who is also a TV news reporter agreed to donate one of his kidneys to Jim. Later on, the doctor immediately schedules the surgeries. He underwent a kidney transplant in April 2018 and now he has recovered from the kidney transplant surgery.

During an interview with TV Newser, Jim, while undergoing surgery, Jim said he felt lucky to have the support of his family and friend.
