Wendy Schmidt Bio | Wiki
Wendy Schmidt (Full Name: Wendy Susan Schmidt) is a popular American businesswoman and philanthropist who is the president of the Schmidt Family Foundation, holding more than $1 billion in philanthropic assets. Following graduating in 1981 with a master’s degree in journalism, Wendy joined the marketing department of Sun Microsystems, where Eric Schmidt afterward worked as well. Wendy left Sun in 1986 to start an interior design firm, which she ran for 16 years.
She also works as president of Schmidt Ocean Institute, which she and Eric founded in 2009 to advance oceanographic research by offering scientists access to the world’s first year-round philanthropic research vessel in exchange for making their findings publicly available. Following operating the ship Falkor for a decade, hosting more than 1,000 scientists, discovering scores of new marine species and underwater formations, and mapping over half a million square miles of the seafloor, she and Eric began developing a larger research vessel, Falkor (too), in late 2021.
The new ship, equipped with the recent technology and robotics that will broaden the capacity and capability of conducting science at sea, started expeditions in March 2023. Early in her philanthropy, she collaborated with The XPrize Foundation to sponsor two multimillion-dollar competitions to improve the cleanup of surface oil spills and to form a new generation of accurate and affordable ocean acidification sensors. As a journalist early in her career, she developed a deep appreciation for clear, concise communication that has extended into her philanthropy, as she serves to strengthen community-based, environmental, science, and investigative journalism. She has supported many documentaries and worked as executive producer of the award-winning films Gather and The Human Element.
