Vincent is married to his beautiful wife Doris Cully. Together, the couple shares three children. On November 13, 2017, Vincent praised his wife on his Twitter account saying that he is grateful to her for raising their kids while having a terrific 40-year career in Pharma.

Vincent Racaniello Education

He graduated from Cornell University in 1974 with a BA in biological sciences. Later, Vincent completed his Ph.D. in the laboratory of Peter Palese in 1980, studying genetic reassortment of influenza virus. As a post-doctoral fellow in David Baltimore’s laboratory at MIT (1979–1982), he used recombinant DNA technology to clone and sequence the genome of the small RNA animal virus poliovirus. Using these tools, Vincent generated the first infectious clone of an animal RNA virus. The construction of the infectious clone revolutionized modern virology.

Vincent Racaniello Virology | Podcast | Blog

Vincent’s blog and podcasts, specialized pages on Influenza 101 and Virology 101 aim to bring microbiology to non-scientists. Continuing to bring virology to those outside of the field, he established a library containing podcasts of lectures he has recently given at Columbia University. Currently, he serves as the host of This Week in Virology.

This Week in Parasitism with colleague Dickson Despommier, This Week in Microbiology with Michelle Swanson, Michael Schmidt and Elio Schaechter, This Week in Evolution with Nels Elde, Immune with Stephanie Langel and Cynthia Leifer, and This Week in Neuroscience also unify science with technology.

Vincent Racaniello Columbia | Lab

Vincent established his own research laboratory at Columbia University in the fall of 1982. The purpose of his laboratory is to understand the replication and pathogenesis of small RNA animal viruses in Picornaviruses. The reproductive cycle of a virus starts with its attachment to and entry into the cytoplasm of a cell.

Vincent’s laboratory identified CD155 (poliovirus receptor, PVR), a cell surface protein, as the protein that mediates this process. Understanding how the interaction between virus and cell alters the viral particle and how virus entry is facilitated by the interaction has helped understand the means by which poliovirus infection is initiated.

Vincent Racaniello Amy Rosenfeld

Amy Rosenfeld earned her Ph.D. training in virology in the laboratory of Vincent at Columbia University. While there, she established a genetic screen to identify the cellular proteins required for translation of hepatitis C virus mRNA. In 2014, Amy returned to Vincent’s laboratory to initiate studies on enterovirus D68, building on the laboratory’s expertise in research on picornaviruses, to identify the cellular receptor for virus attachment and cell entry.
