Victoria Arlen is an American sports journalist working at ESPN, a multinational basic cable sports channel as a features reporter and also as a host. Additionally, she serves as a host, an actress, speaker, model, and former American Paralympian swimmer. She joined ESPN in December 2015.
She joined ESPN when she was in a wheelchair and in the Spring of 2017, Victoria celebrated the one-year anniversary of regaining her ability to walk. Victoria was diagnosed with two rare conditions; Transverse Myelitis and Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis in 2006, at the age of 11. She lost the ability to speak, eat, walk and move. Victoria was born a healthy child on September 26, 1994. However, in 2006, at the age of 11, she got sick after experiencing frequent colds and pneumonia. She had myoclonic seizures which are brief, shock-like jerks of a muscle or a group of muscles that were very painful. She developed two rare conditions known as transverse myelitis and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis. These are autoimmune disorders that cause swelling in the brain and spinal cord. She lost the ability to speak, eat, walk and move and lapsed into a vegetative state, a condition she stayed in for four years. The doctors warned her family that her recovery was extremely unlikely.
Victoria however was not brain dead and she could hear everything that was going on in her hospital room around her except that she could not make her body respond. Her family however believed she could come out of that state and kept on talking to her. Victoria’s recovery began in 2010 when she made eye contact with her mother after coming out of her vegetative state. After coming out of her vegetative state, Victoria was paralyzed from the belly button down. She started using the wheelchair and in 2016, she learned how to walk again.

In 2013, the International Paralympic Committee decided to disqualify her from the Paralympic Swimming World Championships in Montreal after ruling that her condition was not permanent. The committee classified her as between being a 5 and 6 in a system where 15 is nearly able-bodied since she swam with only her arms because she had significant upper-body impairment. A medical report that was submitted to the committee from Dr. Michael Levy of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, suggested that if Victoria were to get years of physical therapy, she might be able to walk again.
