In May 2022, Tom opened up about his past mental breakdown, saying it was ‘100 times worse than being shot. Tom took off from work in 2018 after developing insomnia, which resulted in an ‘addiction’ to the sleeping pill Zopiclone. Also, he recalled being shot in 1999 when he was covering a riot in Jakarta, saying the breakdown felt worse. Further, he is doing okay and has decided to be open about his past struggles in the hopes that it will help others.
