Following his graduation from Yale, Stone moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where he served as a remedial reading and math teacher at the Fulton County Juvenile Detention Center. Stone was supplementing his pay by moonlighting as a waiter when he landed an entry-level news position at WXIA-TV, a local NBC affiliate. Following less than two years in 1980 as a reporter, writer, and broadcast producer in Atlanta, Stone was Employed by ABC News as an assignment editor for its Washington, D.C., news bureau.
Stone started filing stories as an on-air correspondent for ABC, in 1982 covering such major events as the war in Lebanon, the exodus of Vietnamese boat people in the mid-1980s, and Rajiv Gandhi’s election campaign after the assassination of his mother, Indira Gandhi. He was promoted to a regular role on the ABC newsmagazine 20/20 in 1986. Early that year, Stone also worked as a substitute host on Good Morning America as well as a sports anchor at ABC’s World News Sunday.
In 1992, Stone completed his twelve years of service with ABC and joined NBC News to work as co-anchor alongside Jane Pauley on Dateline NBC.
