Stephen Thrasher ( Full name: Stephen William Thrasher) is an American writer and editor. He currently serves as the inaugural Daniel H. Renberg Chair of social justice in reporting. Since, 2019, Steven has been an assistant professor of journalism at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. In addition to that, Steven is a contributing editor for BuzzFeed.
His journalism work has appeared in various publications such as The New York Times, The Village Voice, Scientific American, and The Guardian. Along the way, Steven has won serves awards for his academic research on the criminalization of HIV/AIDS and also his journalism on LGBTQ and other marginalized people. Steven has been named One of the most influential and impactful people of 2019 on Out magazine’s Out 100, awarded An Honorable Mention for the American Studies Association’s Ralph Henry Gabriel Prize for Best Dissertation in 2019,
In 2018, Steven won a Ford Foundation grant for Creativity and Free Expression. His research combines both journalistic and ethnographic methods to study racism, policing, homophobia, medicine, culture, incarceration, and health intersect. Apart from being a writer and a journalist, Steven is a scholar of the criminalization of HIV/AIDS. His work revolves around marginalized populations. As a teacher, Steven encourages his students to draw upon history, culture, theory and be able to report to critically read & create media narratives.
