Steven Pitts is an American co-founder and Board Chair of the National Black Worker Center. He retired from the UC Berkeley Labor Center in 2020 where for 19 years he worked on a variety of projects centered on Black worker organizing. Steven’s writings as well as his podcast take a close look at efforts to build the collective power of Black workers.
He joined the Labor Center in August of 2001 from Houston, Texas. For the 15 years prior to his arrival at the Labor Center, Steven taught economics at Houston Community College. He also served as an adjunct lecturer in the African American Studies Program at the University of Houston.

Across the site, Steven features conversations with union and worker center leaders, rank-and-file worker activists, organizers, and advocates about their fight against the intertwined evils of racism and capitalism.
The podcast brings fresh visions of a world free of exploitation and reveals the strategies and tactics that can get people there. Through Black Work Talk, Steven shares his perspective on the struggle to forge what Dr. King called “the Beloved Community.”
Steven Pitts UC Berkeley Labor Center
He served as a labor policy specialist at the University of California, Berkeley, Center for Labor Research and Education from 2001 to 2020. While there, Steven focused on leadership development and Black worker issues. He also produced several reports on Black workers and job quality, launched a Black union leadership school. Additionally, Steven co-founded the National Black Worker Center, a network of Black worker centers around the country.
Prior to joining the Labor Center, he taught economics for 15 years at the Houston Community College. Previously, he worked in a machine shop in Houston called Hughes Tool Company for 8 years. While there, Steven was active in the United Steelworkers of America local trying to build a stronger and more democratic union.
