Steve Schmidt (Full name: Stephen Edward Schmidt) is an American communication and public affairs, strategist. He worked on Republican political campaigns, including those of form US President George W. Bush, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Arizona Senator John McCain.
Also, he served as the senior campaign strategist and advisor to McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign. He pushed McCain to select Sarah Palin as his running mate, a choice which Steve came to regret.

Steve joined the Delta Tau Delta fraternity and was a member of the campus Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program. He did fieldwork for Republican candidates in Delaware, sometimes putting on campaign buttons in class. He completed his final math course in 2013 and received his degree.

He renounced the Republican Party as “fully the party of Trump” in June 2018.
Steve made a statement in early December 2020, saying “The Republican Party is an organized conspiracy for the purposes of maintaining power for self-interest, and the self-interest of its donor class … It’s no longer dedicated to American democracy.” He is the founder of a group called The Lincoln Project which was founded to campaign against former President Trump.
Steve resigned from the board in 2021 in the wake of the John Weaver sexual harassment scandal. He claimed that he had only learned of the allegations in the previous month. However, this claim was contradicted by a former Lincoln Project employee. Steve announced in a podcast on December 14, 2020, that he planned to register as a member of the Democratic Party.
