At the age of 25 years, he became the youngest Senior Writer and in 1991 he covered the hometown reaction to the North Stars’ first appearance in a Stanley Cup final in 10 years at Twin Cities. Moreover, after three years Steve wrote an epic feature on S.I.’s 40th Anniversary issue.
Further, he also wrote an essay How We Got Here with 24 pages and it became the longest-ever article published in a single issue of S.I. At the magazine. Steve also covered events including Wimbledon, World Series, and the World Cup. From 1998 to 2007 he had a weekly column Air & Space that was mainly about sports.
He left Sports Illustrated in February 2007 and became a contributor at Time magazine and also Golf Digest. Steve also wrestled three bears during the 2009 PGA Championship.
