Shooty Babitt ( Full name: Mack Neal “Shooty” Babitt ) is an American retired baseball player. He was the second baseman during the 1981 Major League Baseball (MLB) season. Shooty became a baseball scout after retiring as a player. In 2008, he became a television analyst. Shooty was drafted in the 25th round of the 1977 Major League Baseball Draft by the Oakland Athletics.
He started his playing career with a seven-game hitting streak, the second-longest such streak in Oakland A’s history. For his career, Shooty played in 54 major league games in 1981, hitting .256 in 156 at-bats. Billy Martin, the Oakland manager later commented, “If you ever see Shooty play second base for me again, I want you to Shooty me.” Shooty served long-time advance scout for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Since 2008, he has been serving as a scout for the New York Mets and has also been working as a television color analyst on the pre-and post-game shows on NBC Sports California for Oakland A’s home games. Since early 2014, Shooty has substituted for game analyst Ray Fosse on 20 A’s games per season.
