Shane played junior hockey for the Prince Albert Raiders of the WHL and also Swift Current Broncos. The Buffalo Sabres drafted Shane during the 7th round of the 1994 NHL Entry Draft, however, he never played for the team. In 1996, after turning professional Shane played for several league teams including Cincinnati, Saint John of the AHL, Grand Rapids of the IHL, and Adirondack of the AHL.
In 2000 he joined the Ottawa Senators, where he established his NHL career and later played for the Anaheim Ducks, Atlanta Thrashers, and Nashville Predators. On January 2, 2008, during the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, the Boston Bruins acquired Shane together with Brandon Bochenski. However, a year later that was on July 3, 2009, Shane signed a one-year contract unrestricted free agent with Minnesota.
During the start of the 2010-11 season, Shane remained as an unsigned free agent, however, on February 23, 2011, it was publically announced that Shane would re-join the Boston Bruins on a try-out basis. Later on February 26, 2011, he signed a contract to play as a depth defenseman for the Bruins. The Bruins defeated the Vancouver Canucks during the Stanley Cup Final and were awarded the Stanley Cup. Shane officially retired as a player On August 31, 2011.
