Sean Patrick Maloney is a popular American lawyer and politician who is the nominee to serve as the United States ambassador to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development since June 2023. He previously worked as the U.S. representative from New York’s 18th congressional district from 2013 through 2023. The district covers Newburgh, Beacon, and Poughkeepsie. A member of the Democratic Party, Sean ran for New York Attorney General in 2018, coming in third place to Letitia James in the primary.
Sean joined politics as a volunteer for Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential campaign and afterward worked as his senior West Wing adviser and White House Staff Secretary. Prior to being elected to Congress, Sean served as a software company executive and as an attorney. Sean was elected to the U.S. House in 2012, defeating Republican Party incumbent Nan Hayworth. He campaigned as a moderate and became a member of the centrist New Democratic Coalition while working in Congress. Sean is the first openly gay person elected to Congress from New York.
He worked as chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee from 2021 until 2023.
