Ronald Burkle ( Full name: Ronald Wayne Burkle) is an American businessman, prominent Democratic activist, and fundraiser. He is the co-founder and managing partner of a private investment firm called The Yucaipa Companies, LLC. This firm specializes in U.S. companies in the distribution, sports, logistics, entertainment, food, hospitality, consumer, retail, and light industrial sectors.

The Yucaipa has executed grocery-chain mergers as well as acquisitions that involve supermarket chains such as Ralphs, Fred Meyer, and Jurgensen’s. The company once owned stakes in about 35 companies, including Whole Foods Market and the grocery chains A&P before their respective demise and takeover. Ronald parlayed a $3,000 investment in American Silver and another metals company into $30,000.

He started investing in and flipping undervalued grocery stores. Ronald made at least one deal with Michael Milken, the assistance of a junk bond financier. He was promoted to store manager at Stater Bros. He later became the vice president at Petrolane, Inc., Stater’s parent company.  Petrolane decided to sell Stater Bros and Ronald, who was then 29 secretly organized a leveraged buyout with the vice-chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, Charles Munger.

Charles agreed to put up half of the equity. Ronald made his bid to Petrolane’s board. The bid was 20% lower than Petrolane’s internal valuation.  The board rejected his offer and fired him. Ronald’s portfolio was by then worth some $5 million. During the next five years, he continued to invest in stocks and oversaw his family’s rental properties.
