The family moved to the US after Roi’s mother got a job there as a registered nurse at Duke Hospital. While his mother was working, Roi was under the care of his father. Most of his childhood life was spent in the United States until he was 8 years. From ther, Toi and his two younger brothers went back to the Philippines as their parents were going through a financial problem and couldn’t take care of Roi and his siblings.
His relatives and grandparents took care of Roi and his brothers temporarily while their parents were dealing with and fixing their problems in America. The Youtuber was very overwhelmed as the culture in the Philippines is very different from the United States. He and his brothers went back to the U.S. two years later and continue their lives there.

Roi Wassabi Education
He joined preschool when he was about 4-years-old. Roi experienced separation anxiety on the first day of school, as he had never been away from his mom and dad for so long. He feels so confused for the first couple of months of his education because he didn’t understand English very well. Eventually, his parents signed him up for the ESL (English as a Second Language) program. This program helped him speak English properly and communicate with his classmates.
After he was sent back to the Philippines with his brothers at the age of 8, he went through the same problem. The Youtuber couldn’t understand the Filipino Language. At first, his mother and grandmother were trying to sign up Roi for Private school. He had to write an entrance exam, which he didn’t understand. The School principal just let him pass after seeing Roi cry. Still, he never understood the language that was spoken by his classmates in the Philippines.
However, he got used to it with the help of his close friends, Elmer and L.A. Roi went back to North Carolina after two years and went to elementary school as a fifth grader. He was confused once again as he had become used to the culture in the Philippines which he temporarily assimilated into. Luckily, Roi found school easier because what he learned in the Philippines was two levels advanced. By the time he was in middle school, he wasn’t as shy as he was before. Roi took part in different extra-curricular activities, such as track and cross-country.
During his freshman year in high school, Roi felt that being an older sibling gave him no older figure to look up to. Therefore, he just searched for the right group of friends to hang out with. He graduated from high school in 2009 and got his diploma. Later, he attended Durham Technical Community College but transferred to NC State University after 8 months. At NC, Roi studied Computer engineering, which he thought was a mistake. Then, he later changed his major to Computer Science which consists of programming.
Roi found it confusing and dissatisfied. As he was stressed, the Youtuber wanted to change his major again in order to do something much easier. However, his mother wouldn’t allow and she threatened him that she won’t pay for his college if he doesn’t finish. Eventually, his mother allowed him to change his major from Computer Science to Film Studies after the “Call Me Maybe” Parody video went viral. Roi created the video with Alex Burriss and posted it on YouTube. He eventually graduated from college.
Roi Wassabi Youtube
He made some videos using his parent’s camera when he was in 8th grade. The Youtuber found it as an opportunity to make dance and lip-sync videos for fun. While in middle school, Roi met Alex who showed him a magic card trick. However, Alex didn’t make videos with Roi until 2 years later. One day, as Roi was watching Jackass The Movie, he found the scene when Steve-O stuck wasabi through his nostril as a memorable one. Roi loved the word “wasabi” and decided to use it as his account username for a game called Starcraft.
However, he accidentally spelled it wrong by adding an extra “s”. While in high school, Roi was obligated to make a video with his friends, Robby and Matt, for a school project. The three friends later filmed funny videos often with other friends, including Alex, Jeff, Drew, and Marvin. Youtube was created in 2006, so that’s where the group posted their videos in order to share them with their family and friends. A lot of people from around the world loved the videos and since then, those videos have been getting a lot of views.
Initially, their Youtube channel was called hoiitsroi as Roi is Filipino and most Filipino people say “Hoi”, which rhymes with his name. Later, they changed the name to Wassabi, inspired by how Roi spelled it in his Starcraft game account. As time passed by, Roi and his friends got busy. Some had jobs or lost interest, and they stopped making videos with him. He was left with Alex and they continued to film videos, such as Best Friends, Tarzan, and Jane. Also, they made more Lip-Sync and dance videos.
Roi Wassabi Wassabi Productions
After joining College, Roi and Alex postponed making videos for about 8 months. Roi had an iPod touch that he dis not use or like, so, he sold it in order to buy a new DLSR Camera (CanonT2i) for the Wassabi Productions’ comeback. He and Alex filmed a video called “Call Me Maybe” Parody video and posted it on YouTube. It went viral and their channel became more popular as they gained more viewers and subscribers. The pair continued to make more videos and promote Wassabi Productions.
Roi left Wassabi Productions in January 2016, leaving the responsibility all to Alex Wassabi. He wanted time to pursue his other passions, especially on his new Gaming Channel. Roi promised that he will collab with Wassabi Productions in the future, but for now, Roi and Alex will go their separate ways. Despite that Roi quit Wassabi Productions, he said that he was once a Wassabian, and he will always be a Wassabian!
