Robert Tilton Ministries | Word Of Faith

In 1969 Robert had a conversion experience to evangelical Christianity and started his ministry in 1974. He took his family on the road to, in his words, “preach this gospel of Jesus. Robert preached to small congregations as well as revivals throughout Texas and Oklahoma as well. He finally settled in Dallas and built a small nondenominational charismatic church called the Word of Faith Family Church in Farmers Branch, in 1976. Later, the church launched a local television program called Daystar.

Although the church was growing steadily, Daystar failed to expand beyond the Dallas area until Robert traveled to Hawaii for his self-described version of Jesus’s forty days in the wilderness. While there, Robert came upon an increasingly popular new form of television programming: the late-night infomercial. A real estate promoter Dave Del Dotto particularly influenced Robert after he hosted hour-long infomercials showing his glamorous life in Hawaii.

Also, Dave had on-camera testimonials lauding his book titled “get rich quick”. Robert returned from Hawaii in 1981and revamped Daystar into an hour-long “religious infomercial” with a new name, Success-N-Life. He did so with the help of a US$1.3 million loan from Dallas banker Herman Beebe.

Robert Tilton Preacher | Preaching

In 1996, Robert moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and returned to the airwaves in 1997 with a new version of a ministry called  Success-N-Life. He bought airtime on independent tv stations primarily serving inner-city areas.  Success-N-Life returned to his previous message of asking for “vows of faith” from his viewers instead of exorcisms. In 1998, the program started airing as part of the two-hour late-night umbrella rotation block of religious programming on Black Entertainment Television (BET) entitled BET Inspiration.

The program later began occupying the first hour of the BET programming block and ran on The Word Network as well. In 1996, Robert formally dissolved The Word of Faith Family Church and World Outreach Center. He had not preached at the church since March 16, 1996, though he was still listed as the church’s senior pastor. Later, Robert named  Bob Wright, Chattanooga, Tennessee, minister as senior associate pastor. The church membership had declined to less than 300.

The city of Farmers Branch purchased the church building in 1999 for use as a future civic center. However, the plans were scrapped after the economy suffered a downturn. In 2003, the building was finally demolished to make room for a new Dallas Stars-sponsored youth hockey center. In March 2005,  Robert began a new church based in Hallandale, Florida, not far from his home in Miami Beach. The church was already in existence under the pastorship of former televangelist David Epley.

His new church, currently called “Christ the Good Shepherd Worldwide Church”, had an average of 200 members in 2007. The church moved into a new location in Miami on May 13, 2007, and was officially renamed much like the original church in Dallas, “Word of Faith Church”. In 2005, Robert established a church in Las Vegas, Nevada, originally called Christ the Good Shepherd Worldwide Church. The church has also been officially renamed “Word of Faith Church”. The current Las Vegas church’s resident pastor is called Natalie Vafai.
