Richard Ben-Veniste is an American lawyer and legal analyst. He first rose to fame as a special prosecutor during the Watergate scandal. Richard has been a member of the 9/11 Commission and is known for his pointed questions and criticisms of members of both the Clinton and George W. Bush administrations. From 1968 to 1973, he was an assistant U.S. attorney in the Southern District of New York.
Also, Richard served as the chief of the Special Prosecutions section from 1971 to 1973. From 1973 to 1975, he served as the leading Watergate prosecutor, as chief of the Watergate Task Force of the Watergate Special Prosecutor’s Office. Richard was the Democrats’ chief counsel from 1995 to 1996 on the Senate Whitewater Committee.
The committee investigated different allegations involving Bill and Hillary Clinton. In 2000, Richard was a presidential appointee to the Nazi War Crimes and Japanese Imperial Government Records Interagency Working Group. The group ultimately declassified some 8 million documents relating to war crimes in World War II and the post-war era.
