Ravi Shastri is a renowned former head coach of the Indian national cricket team, a cricket commentator, and a former captain of the Indian Cricket Team. He played for the Indian national cricket team between 1981 and 1992 in both Test matches and One Day Internationals. He retired at the age of 31 due to his recurring knee injury.

In 1985, he was elected Champion of Champions in the World Championship of Cricket in Australia. Also, he played domestic cricket, for Bombay and led them to the Ranji Trophy title in his final year of playing.  In addition, he has done commentary on behalf of the BCCI in the matches that India plays.

He first joined Bombay in 1979 as he was selected to represent the Bombay team in the Ranji Trophy in his last year of junior college. He played for the team until 1993. During his time with Bombay, he played for Glamorgan from 1987 to 1991. During his time, he did little for the fortunes of the county which finished at the bottom of the first-class table in two of those seasons. He did the best bowling performance of 7 for 49. The team finished 5th in the Sunday League from 14 in 1987.

Ravi then returned to Bombay and led them to the Ranji Trophy title in his final year of playing. Further, he went on to beat Bengal in a low scoring final to lift the Ranji Trophy. It was their first championship since the famous win against Delhi nine years ago. He announced his retirement from first-class cricket in September 1994 while in Sri Lanka covering the Singer World Series.

He was a fast debut in India’s national side on February 1981 in a match against New Zealand. Moreover, his last test was on December 26, 1992, in South Africa. He then had an ODI debt vs England on November 25, 1981. His last play was with the South Africa series. His knee injury returned before the series and put Shastri out of cricket for eight months. Additionally, he has never again represented India in international cricket.

Further, in a new contract, he was re-appointed as the head coach of the senior men’s Indian team on August 16, 2019, with the contract extending up to the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup in India.
