He broke the story with LIVE Seattle traffic cameras over the scene, taking viewers via the chaos as it unfolded, over 30 minutes ahead of other Seattle stations.
He reported LIVE in February of 2020, from The Oscars in Hollywood, providing nearly a week of coverage from the red carpet at KOMO and Sinclair stations around the nation. Preston has reported from the front lines of several devastating wildfires and from inside prisons and jails over California.
He was the first journalist to break the news that San Diego teen, Chelsea King, was missing. Preston served directly with Chelsea’s mom, delivering live reports, in hopes of finding the teen alive. As Chelsea was later found murdered along a San Diego trail, Phillips completed several investigative reports, uncovering and breaking details of her murderer, who was afterward convicted.
Before serving in San Diego, he anchored and reported at KSEE, in Fresno, California. During his time in Fresno, he investigated and reported exclusively on a U.S. Army veteran facing life in a Mexican prison, over weapons charges. He also traveled to Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, to interview the veteran behind bars inside the nation’s notorious Cereso Prison.
