On his own in 2018 Peter co-wrote and directed the comedy-drama Green Book, which won the Audience Award at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2018. For his work on the film, Peter also won the Golden Globe Award for Best Screenplay and the Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. Peter decided to pursue writing full-time, which prompted him to quit his sales job and move to Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where he got a job as a waiter.
On one of the tables he was waiting, Peter struck up a conversation with a writing professor from UMass Amherst, who encouraged him to apply to graduate school.
