She later wrote articles in English, such as covering the 2014 Russian conflict in the Donbas region of Ukraine. In 2016 Olga became promoted to the post of ‘national editor’, and by 2017 Olga had become the deputy to the newspaper’s editor-in-chief.
In 2021, Olga received the offer of a fellowship from the Stigler Center at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. While there, most of her colleagues at the Kyiv Post were sacked by the newspaper’s proprietor because they had been refusing to serve with a newly appointed editor who had been brought in to ensure the paper wrote pieces that were less critical of the Ukrainian government under President Zelensky.
Olga joined these workmates who, in November 2021, decided to set up their own, independent news outlet – the Kyiv Independent. Olga was unanimously appointed to be its editor-in-chief, and by 2022 she became in charge of 24 journalists and editors. The publication became independent.
