Nicole Hollis Family
She was born and raised in Jupiter, Florida, United States of America, a place that was half-red neck, half-surfer. As a kid, Nicole woke up and go and feed all the animals, the horses, the chickens, all in her underpants. It was the middle of nowhere. Nearby Jupiter Island, was very seasonal, with all this old money. As Nicole got older, her friends’ parents would maintain these houses in the summer. That’s where she saw all this beauty and architecture for the first time, and it really spoke to her.
Nicole was like: “Oh, wow.”Rooms were done entirely in one fabric: matching toile to the wall curtains to the coverings to the upholstery. There was a very Mediterranean influence, with center courtyards and colored tiles. At one point she complimented someone’s curtains and said, “Yeah, my interior designer picked them out.” And it was immediate: “I wanna do that!” Nicole recalls.

Nicole Hollis Interior Design | Design
She developed steadfast creative ambitions when she was a little girl. Nicole’s desire to enter the design industry saw her dabbling in fashion and graphic design in her small Florida hometown prior to embarking on a career in interior design that took her to New York, Paris, and San Francisco. Nicole has established her own studio there. Her diverse portfolio includes Bay Area-inspired hotel decor, modern rustic wineries, and nightclub-esque private penthouses.
Nicole and her team work closely with architects from a project’s inception. They inform everything from interior layouts to lighting design. The designer’s affinity for dark, dramatic environments might lead one to believe her personal theme song is “Paint It Black.” However, this aesthetic belies a genuinely bright personality and infectious enthusiasm for what she does. Nicole is plainly a joy to be around. She has her office and studio, situated on a small, quaint tree-lined side street in San Francisco, in the city’s industrial SoMa neighborhood.
Nature has always been a force, with everything; she wants to see plants and fresh flowers, and she loves taxidermy. Nicole saw a lot of dead birds and animals growing up, and she didn’t think they were gross, in fact, she thought they were beautiful. The color combinations, shapes, forms, complex patterns and textures, minimalism, and complexity of skeletons; Nicole doesn’t know why they move her, but they do. Even the decay. The tension that she loves, contrasts those with a slick plastic chair or something truly man-made. Machined steel, and raw glass, are things that turn her on.

Nicole Hollis House | San Francisco House
Nicole moved to New York to go to FIT and study interior design, and she was working at an architecture firm, doing mostly retail projects. She came to San Francisco from NY with her then-boyfriend. They broke up a few months later, but Nicole got a call from Starwood Hotels, which was establishing its new W brand, and she started as part of their design group. It was a great industry and great exposure.
However, she was managing more than she was designing. So she started to ask around and found that Howard Backen was the best architect in San Francisco at the time. Nicole faked her way in. He told her he didn’t believe in interior designers but hired her anyway and taught her everything she needed to know. Nicole learned to study and consider all ideas. Now, Nicole has established her own studio in San Fransisco where she lives with her husband and their daughter.

Designer Nicole transforms a San Francisco landmark with sinuous, painterly marbles, and statement-making art into a family home that’s a star turn of creative ambition. Nicole describes the storied manse as “Grateful Dead meets Burning Man meets Marrakech meets Victorian posh.”
The groove for this historic San Francisco manse would be psychedelic if only houses came with a soundtrack. The mind-bending abode pays tribute to the city’s progressive cultural legacy as well as the audacious tastes of Nicole’s clients. The designer traces the elaborate web of influences covered in the hallucinatory vision of modern hippie-luxe.
Nicole wanted to bring rock and roll into the life of the house, as an applied gloss and part of its DNA. The Colonial Revival–style home was designed by architect Edward John Vogel and built-in 1897, Less florid than San Francisco’s Victorian-era Painted Ladies. The location of the home is in the storied Haight-Ashbury district placed the house at the rainbow-bright center of the 1960s counterculture.
A previous homeowner, the era when Gene Estribou, opened a recording studio on the dwelling’s attic level. Some of their earliest tracks were laid down there by The Grateful Dead, as did Quicksilver Messenger Service, Steve Miller Band, and other mandarins of the San Francisco sound.
