Neil Cavuto (Full Name: Neil Patrick Cavuto) is a popular American television news anchor, executive, commentator, and business journalist for Fox News. He works as a host of three television programs: Your World with Neil Cavuto and Cavuto Live, both on Fox News, and Cavuto: Coast to Coast on sister channel Fox Business Network since January 20, 2018.
Prior to joining Fox, Neil served as a principal anchor and reporter for CNBC. Neil co-anchored CNBC’s initial broadcast on April 17, 1989. He was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma which is a type of cancer that affects the body’s immune system when he was at the age of 29 years old. Neil began receiving chemotherapy and radiation but didn’t tell his colleagues about it. “I was paranoid that I’d lose my job,” he told People in 2002. “I was a basket case.” Neil started seeking treatment options and he settled on a form of radiotherapy. The treatment was intense with doctors firing strong radiation at his body, but he eventually recovered. In the process of undergoing the therapy, the intense radiation led to him losing half a lung.
After 10 years, Neil began experiencing new, worrying symptoms. “I was stumbling and falling,” he said. “I would wake up prickly. My legs felt like stilts.” He received a diagnosis of several sclerosis, a degenerative neurological disease that has no known cure. At times, he will experience pain while on-the-air, simply trying to do his job. “When it’s really bad, my shoulders can’t move, my head is spinning, I can’t feel my arms or my legs,” he said.
The illness has taken its toll on Neil’s vision. Currently, the host distrusts his eyesight so much that he’s stopped using teleprompters altogether. This made him now take memorizing everything from scripts to his guests’ opinions in case his vision completely fails. Later on, Neil was diagnosed with “a widow maker which is a coronary artery so blocked that, at any time one could just drop dead. Neil’s left anterior descending coronary artery was completely blocked and that made him undergo open-heart surgery.
