Nathan Connolly ( Full name: Nathan Daniel Beau Connolly ) is an American author, historian, podcaster, and professor. He currently serves as the co-host of the U.S. history podcast BackStory. In 2016, the historian was made the Johns Hopkins University’s Herbert Baxter Adams Chair and Associate Professor in History.
He concurrently took on affiliations in the Center for Medical Humanities and Social Medicine, the Alexander Grass Humanities Institute, and the Program in Museums and Society. In December 2016, Nathan joined BackStory with Virginia Humanities as a producer. The program had been a public radio broadcast over the preceding eight years.
The historian came aboard with the conversion of the show to podcasting and the addition of Joanne Freeman. Currently, the show’s co-hosts include Freeman, Brian Balogh, and Ed Ayers. Peter Onuf serves as a host emeritus.
