Monica Seles is a popular former professional tennis player, motivational speaker, Author, mental health advocate, and fitness enthusiast. On April 21, 2009, Monica released her memoir Getting A Grip: On My Body, My Mind, My Self which chronicles her bout with depression and binge eating disorder (BED) after her stabbing, her father’s cancer diagnosis, and eventual death, her journey back to the game, and a life beyond tennis. Monica won nine major singles titles, eight of them as a teenager while representing Yugoslavia, and the final one while representing the United States. Although Monica received immediate medical assistance for her physical injury, she was treated for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder after the incident and chose to remain away from tennis for the next two years. In July 1995, Monica returned to the court and won her fourth Australian Open title in 1996, but she continuously struggled to regain her earlier competitive edge at the game. Following sustaining a foot injury, Monica played her last official tour match at the 2003 French Open. At the time of her official retirement in 2008, Monica had won 53 career singles titles, including nine Grand Slam championship titles.
