Clementina exercised each day and wrestled with her grandson until they gave up. When Miguel found out about his mother’s cancer diagnosis, he was angry since he was the last person in his family to know about his mother’s condition.
His family knew all along but kept it a secret since he was on an assignment covering an enormous flash flood in Colorado. The doctors who checked her said that it was likely a gene mutation but that did not really help them understand why it was happening to her. The family was told that Clementina would need surgery and afterward she would be okay. However, immediately after surgery, the doctors found out that cancer had spread to her lymph nodes and perhaps the rest of her body.
She was now stage 3 lung cancer which meant that she would require chemotherapy and radiation.
