His goal with the restaurant was to create what he referred to as “modern Los Angeles cuisine.” The restaurant can hold 60 people in the dining room and has a private room that could accommodate an additional 10 guests.
In March 2012, the restaurant was named “America’s best new restaurant” by GQ Magazine. Michael opened a fast-casual fish sandwich shop called STRFSH along with brother Bryan in October 2017. While publicly developing and readying ink, the chef quietly planned a smaller restaurant around the corner, a sandwich shop called ink. sack. Michael designed and built the shop himself. In 2014, the chef at Ink and Ink.sack was trying his hand at shoe design. He teamed up with Malibu-based shoe company OTZ for a collaboration called Culinary Brigade. Michael designed two pairs of shoes for the company, a lace-up design ($165) and a slip-on ($175). Both designs look like an ugly hybrid of Toms and the serrated bottoms of a pair of Uggs. The shoes were available on Zappos.com and were meant for use in the kitchen and hospitality environments. The product description stated that there was a durable anti-microbial cork bottom and anti-slip rubber soles. Also, the same description added that the shoes “can also be worn after work.”
