Jean had been threatened by the secret police in Haiti, the Tonton Macoute. He and his wife traveled to the United States on a tourist visa.
Initially, they spoke no English. Jean became a paint company manager and his wife worked as a nurse. After the birth of their daughter Mia, they were able to gain a U.S. residency permit under an immigration law that favored immigrants from the Western Hemisphere who had a child born in the United States. However, the law expired in January 1976, just 25 days after Mia’s birth.
Her parents later became naturalized US citizens. At the age of 5, Mia’s family moved from Brooklyn to Norwalk, Connecticut. Mia was raised as a Catholic in the faith of her parents. Her parents brought her older siblings from Haiti to reunite the family after the family settled in Norwalk.
