On December 3, 2020, Mat shared his colorectal cancer diagnosis and the importance of early detection on social media. The American Cancer Society had urged people to get their first colonoscopy at 45 or sooner and his wife insisted he does it. After the colonoscopy, the gastroenterologist found a 40mm polyp in his rectum with cancer cells on it. There were no more cancer cells in his body. They caught it so early, and the cells stayed contained to the polyp. The doctor recommended transanal endoscopic microsurgery and he recovered within a week.
